    Description

Antique Masonic Gilded Silver Jewel Medal Alliance of Peace and Union 1864
Pelican piercing its breast in an enamelled medallion protected by a glass in the center of a star set with several stones, surrounded by a laurel wreath with green stones.
The star (dimensions: 57 * 60 mm) is held by a crown set with brilliant diamond and emerald-type stones, then held by a bail to which is hung a red ribbon. The decoration is placed in its case covered with a felt in blue-green tones.
The gilding on the surface is slightly worn.
(Dimensions of the star with the crown: 82 mm)
The Peace and Union lodge was created in 1776. It was interrupted during the Revolution, then from 1814 to 1819. Finally, it merged in 1873 with Mars and the Arts (Cf. Marc LABOURET, “Les Métaux et la Mémoire”).
    Made in city of Nantes.
The sacrificial symbolism of the “Pelican in Her Piety” seems to pre-date Christianity, and according to the Catholic Education Resource Center “the pelican symbolizes Jesus our Redeemer who gave His life for our redemption and the atonement He made through His passion and death.” The reverse side of the cross with a rose and may be symbolic of the Masonic Rose Croix or of the Rosicrucians.
    Really rare item fro collectors.
