    MAHMUD I CAME TO THE THRONE WHEN HIS UNCLE, SULTAN AHMET III, ACCEDED TO THE DEMANDS OF ROIOTING JANISSARIES TO ABDICATE. THEY ALSO DEMANDED THE DEATH OF THE GRAND VIZIER, WHO WAS PROMPTLY STRANGLED.
    FOR THE FIRST YEAR, THE INSURRECTIONISTS WERE IN CONTROL, BUT THEY WERE BROUGHT DOWN AND THEIR LEADERS MET THE SAME FATE AS THE PREVIOUS VIZIER.
